How to make a Star Wars BB8 Cake

Here I made a BB8 cake using their Dome mold.

This is their 7 inches Dome mold.

Here's the full list of products I used :

I filled the mold to about 1 inch from the top. And put it in the oven to bake.

As you see it went over the rim. That permits to cut and have a perfect half round cake. Be careful when cutting it, not to cut the mold.

Here I made myself a small support for the cake. With a tread inside to screw the cake on a base.

After covering the base with some food safe paper.I put it a the bottom of the mold

Now you will see something fun.

I cover the base and the side with chocolate ganache.

I am assembling the cake in the mold and covering it with chocolate ganache at the same time.

Stack the other layer and adding some ganache between the layer.

Her is the last layer and I shall put it to chill for a few minute.

And their it is. A half sphere cake covered with chocolate ganache. See how easy it is to unmold.

Now to put cake dowel to support the other half. Making sure that they touch the wood base.

A small layer of ganache to receive some fondant

I like to put a piece of fondant between the cake and the cakeboard. Some more ganache to receive the cakeboard.

And their it is ready to receive the other half.

I know! My screw is too long. You will see why when I put the fondant why.

Here I am putting the other half. That I prepared.

Making sure that they are well align.

I cover the joint with a layer of ganache. And it is all done.

Covering it with fondant. Not easy

Having it high, permit me to cover well under the shere.

Now let make the head. Out of Rice Krispies.

Make sure that it is round under to follow the shape of the cake.

Covering it with fondant. Well strech

I use plastic film to strech the fondant. To give it a nice uniform shape.

See how the plastic film strech the fondant.

And their you have a perfect half sphere.

Using my round cutter I mark where the grey fondant will go.

Silikomart have  those amazing food color. you need just a small drop.

Let put some detail. Using picture I look at where to put some detail.

I often use plastic film to give round edge.

I determine wich cutter I will need

Cutting the detail

I am using the adjustable rolling pin to rool the fondant out to the same tickness  as the other color.

After cutting all the pieces. I glue them to the cake.

Let make the side detail of BB8. With some food marker I draw the small line detail on the head.

If you need a name on your cake, so easy with those silicone mold.

... and here's the final result !

How to create an Olaf cake

This blog post will describe how to create a Olaf cake. I made this cake for the Icing Smiles foundation. The little girl that receive this cake was amazed by it's size. The whole cake weight an astounding 24 pounds.

Olaf cake

The cake is chocolate with butter icing recover with Silikomart fondant.

Material List

Here's the products list used for this Olaf cake tutorial

Olaf Cake Structure

Here are the element of the structure. If you notice I do not use nut and bolt. I use those pieces that you hammered in the wood. I find those more discrete.

Olaf Cake

To do the effect of the curve. I filled the difference between the cake board and the wood with some fondant.

Olaf Cake

I finish the shape with some Rice Krispies treat glued with some chocolate. I then soften the shape with my pastry tool.

Olaf Cake

To make sure that everything is solid I cover everything in fondant and I clear the hole for the metal rod.

Olaf Cake

There it is! The complete structure. You will notice that my metal rod is covered with big plastic straw that you can find at Silikomart. The middle one is two plates glued one on to the other with a round.

Olaf Cake

After doing the structure I prepare the arm made out of bamboo skewer and fondant. The skewer are well wrap in fondant and I also put some CMC glue that I prepared before.

Olaf Cake

Olaf Cake assembly

After putting the first tier I put a tin coat of fondant between the cake and the following cake board. It make it easier to seperate and cut. When finished assembling I put the cake back in the refrigerator so that the cream harden.

Olaf Cake

Ready to be cut. I put my template just to make sure that I have everything covered. The template is often just a guide and you have to use your imagination since it is in 2D and we want it in 3D

Olaf Cake

There it is all cut up. I will keep the left over to make cake pop !

Olaf Cake

First coat of butter cream icing. I will need a few until I am happy with it and between the coat I will put it back in the refrigerator to harden. I make myself some spatula out of plastic sheet. I find it easier to follow round shape.

Olaf Cake

Let prepare Olaf noze. Using some Silikomart fondant mix with a bit of CMC powder to make it harden. I insert a bamboo skewer to support the noze.

Ready for the fondant. Since it is a chocolat cake I make sure that I clean everything. I start by the bottom and make sure that I follow the line. That way it is easier to hide the joint.

Olaf Cake

I overlap the fondant and then I cut both layer at the same time.

Olaf Cake

After cutting the joint I remove the excess been careful not to dirty the fondant with the icing. That part is not always easy.

Olaf Cake

When the joint is closed I sotfen the joint with a sox filled with corn starch.

I measure the quantity of fondant that I need and I overlap the fondant to have a perfect joint. Softening the joint with my hands before putting more detail. I will put the cake in the refrigerator between steps, as the icing do not become too soft.

Olaf Cake

I finish softening with a nylon sox filled with corn starch. Now for the details. I'll finish all the small details like another cake, adding the eyes, nose, buttons. It's not too complicated with it. This is only a snowman after all.

Olaf Cake

And here's the final result ! I hope that you have enjoyed this Olaf Cake tutorial. You can find the whole list of material I used at the top of the post.

Create Elsa cake using fondant

Elsa Cake Fondant

This cake was created for my 7 year old daughter's birthday by Gilles, one of our contributors.

Products List

It was created using these products which you can find in our store :

Elsa Cake Fondant Tutorial

I got to use Silikomart World silicone mold to make this cake. the few next picture will show you how fun they are.

Elsa Cake Fondant

After baking and cooling I just removed the top of my cakes with a bread knife. I was careful not to cut the mold. I just made the blade flow with the edge.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Look how easy it is to remove them and how sharp they have stayed. The cake did not shrink compare to a metal mold.

Elsa Cake Fondant

See how sharp they are.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now to get serious. I got this doll and I am wraping her leg and head with plastic wrap. So that the doll will not be in contact with the cake.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Let stack the cakes.

Elsa Cake Fondant

If you have notice. I have stacked the cakes all in the front. I do not want it to be in the center and I make sure that the height of the cake is perfect with the doll.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Using a knife I am making a hole to receive the doll.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Inserting the doll in to the cake. I also have put some chocolate ganache inside to hold the doll properly.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now cutting the cake to give it a dress shape. I also cut some wave into the dress.

Elsa Cake Fondant

I apply a first coat of chocolate ganache. On the second coat I smooth all the area of the dress to give it its final shape. I love using chocolate ganache for those cake.

Elsa Cake Fondant

After rolling the sugar paste. I make a cut into it. I will be wrapping the dress around.

Elsa Cake Fondant

From the front to the back. I wrap the dress around the cake. That part is delicate and one must take it's time. I overlap the sugar paste and make the seem into a fold of the dress. the way it will not show. Can you see the seem? Even me I wonder where it is. Taking my time I place the sugar paste where I want and follow the shape of the cake. Yes there is some extra wave into the dress. That is the fun part. We adjust the sugar paste to our liking.

Elsa Cake Fondant

If you notice, I have press the sugar paste to almost nothing at the waste. It as to be a delicate transition.
Covering the arm with a tin piece of sugar paste. on this arm I put the seem under. With another tin piece of sugar paste I do the front part.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now to finish the top with another piece of sugar paste. I have pre-cut the piece to fit properly on the top and bottom. Overlap the seem in the back. It will be hidden later.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Using a small icing tip I give a texture to the top part of the dress.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now that she has removed her facial mask. I fixed the hair with some CMC glue that I made previously.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now to give some shading and luster. Using Silikomart World silver pearl dust. I apply a coat on her dress giving more attention to the top part and also on her arms. Do you see the shine that it give ?

Elsa Cake Fondant

After looking at her I decided to make her cape. Using some paper towel I have made some space to use between the cape and the dress. The cape is made out of Silikomart World gumpaste so that it will stay in place after that I remove the paper towel. And for the fun of it. You will see it one the other picture .
I have press the gum paste cape into the tricot snow mold to give it a texture.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Here is a better view on how I placed the paper towel.

Elsa Cake Fondant

The cape is only attach to the doll on the top part with some CMC glue.

Elsa Cake Fondant

I have curve the sugar paste by the inside to give it some movement.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Her you see a better view of the in-print on the cape. I filled the board with some royal icing.

Elsa Cake Fondant

Now to make the letter for the name. I love those silicone mold from Silikomart World they are so flexible and I could use them them with so many product. From sugar paste to chocolate, gummies and even isomalt.

Elsa Cake Fondant

After that I have filled the letter I just remove the excess with my spatula.

Elsa Cake Fondant

So here she is. I added a few tricot snowflake and one in her hand.
